A Study to Explore Anxiety and Coping Mechanism of Pubertal girls, in Selected Schools of Ludhiana, Punjab, India

Adolescents account for one fifth of the world’s population and have been on an increasing trend.The rates of depression are higher for boys than girls before puberty; the rate for girls becomes double that of boys during puberty. The study sample was 100 pubertal school girls. The conceptual framework of the study was based on Roy’s Adaptation model. Date was analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics and presented through tables and figures. Present study findings revealed that maximum number of pubertal school girls anxiety in emotional area (26.25 %). 49% had moderate anxiety32% had severe and19 %mild type anxiety. 72% had adaptive coping mechanism 28% had maladaptive coping mechanism. There was negative correlation between anxiety and coping mechanism. Relationship of anxiety and coping mechanism with variables like age, class, education of father, education of mother, monthly family income, previous knowledge were found statistically significant. Other variables like type of family, and religion were found statistically nonsignificant. So it can be concluded that pubertal school girls had anxiety related to puberty.
